According to rumors, Brentford striker Ivan Toney wants to join Arsenal in the January transfer window.
Toney is highly connected to Arsenal as he prepares to return from an eight-month betting ban and has been playing in behind-closed-doors matches.
The Gunners are not the only team interested in signing the Englishman, with Chelsea reportedly planning a bid, with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur also interested.
However, according to the Daily Mail, Toney is ‘coveting’ Arsenal just as much as the north Londoners are, which means the Gunners might be in pole position to capture him when the transfer window opens this winter.
They also report that Mikel Arteta is taking Arsenal’s goal deficit’very seriously’ and that Toney ‘ticks a lot of boxes’ for the Spaniard in terms of character and physicality, despite the fact that a deal for him may effect summer expenditure.
Brentford are said to seek at least £80 million for their top striker, who has 68 goals and 21 assists in 124 outings for the Bees.
Arsenal has reportedly scouted Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez as a possible replacement, who would cost far less than Toney.
Meanwhile, Paul Merson believes Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah aren’t talented enough to lead Arsenal to the Premier League title and has pushed his former team to sign Toney.
I’ve always said it from the start: Eddie Nketiah will not win you the Premier League.’ Merson stated to Sky Sports. ‘I don’t think Gabriel Jesus takes them any further.
‘Ivan Toney is available for them in January; there aren’t many centre forwards available elsewhere in the world. They’re an endangered species. Toney is a talented player who can hold the ball high and perform well in the air. Arsenal may have to go after him.’
