HUGE BLOW: Manchester City suffered a huge injury setback as first-team star was replaced at halftime in a European Championship qualifier.

Manchester City staff are concerned about Nathan Ake’s fitness after the versatile defender was substituted at half-time of the Netherlands’ 3-0 win over Greece.

The two countries went into the game with second place in European Championship Qualification Group B clearly in mind, as France remains the current runaway leader on 15 points, having played two games more than the Netherlands as of full-time on Thursday.

The Netherlands put the game out of reach with three goals in the first half, scoring all of their goals in a 22-minute span, with Marten de Roon scoring the first.

The midfielder’s opener was quickly followed by a goal from Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo, before former Manchester United cult hero Wout Weghorst put the final nail in Greece’s coffin.

The half-time break, though, presented a serious injury concern for Manchester City’s Nathan Ake, who had been working on the left side of a back-three for the Netherlands, alongside Virgil van Dijk and Lutsharel Geertruida at center-back.

Nathan Aké did not return for the second half of the battle as anticipated, according to Dutch broadcaster NOS, due to an injury. At the time, the newspaper claimed that the ailment was ‘likely’ to be his hamstring.
