A quarterback duel between Sam Hartman and DJ Uiagalelei could have taken place in the Sun Bowl. Instead, two quarterbacks making their first starts of the season will be on display when No. 16 Notre Dame takes on No. 19 Oregon State in El Paso, Texas on Friday. Hartman of Notre Dame withdrew out of the competition to prepare for the NFL draft, while Uiagalelei of Oregon State entered the transfer portal.
Running back Audric Estime (1,341 yards, 18 touchdowns rushing) and All-American left lineman Joe Alt are among the other Notre Dame standouts who have opted out of the game. Oregon State’s opt-outs include outstanding linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold (107 tackles, tied for team lead) and receiver Anthony Gould (718 yards, tied for team lead). Despite having his ban for a DUI arrest removed by the school, Beavers standout running back Damien Martinez is not anticipated to participate. During the regular season, Martinez carried for 1,185 yards and nine touchdowns. Oregon State is making changes on more than just the player front. Trent Bray was appointed to head coach after Smith accepted the Michigan State job. Bray, on the other hand, has chosen to focus on staffing and recruiting and is not involved in the Sun Bowl coaching process. Instead, wide receivers coach Kefense Hynson is functioning as interim coach, and he’s looking forward to Oregon State’s third game with Notre Dame all-time. The Beavers won the first two, a 41-9 thrashing in the Fiesta Bowl to finish the 2000 season and a 38-21 win in the Insight Bowl in 2004. Hynson hopes to end on a high note after losing to then-No. 5 Washington and then-No. 6 Oregon in its previous two games. “It’s another test,” remarked Hynson. “You have a really, really good team; they’re well-coached and have good players.” Then, obviously, after starting the year the way we did, we’re eager to get out on the field and attempt to finish the year with a ‘W.’ “ Notre Dame comes into the game on a two-game winning run. It also includes Xavier Watts, the Bronko Nagurski Award winner, as the national defensive player of the year. During the regular season, the junior safety topped the country with seven interceptions. The Fighting Irish are 20-21 in bowl games all-time, including a 1-0 victory in the Sun Bowl. Oregon State is 12-7 overall, including a 2-0 record in El Paso.
