Pete Alonso has emerged as the new home run leader for the New York Mets. Against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night, he hit his 253rd and 254th home runs. Alonso surpassed Darryl Strawberry to become the Mets’ all-time home run leader in the process. He is currently in his eighth season and will probably become a free agent at the end of the current campaign. After a rather poor season, the five-time All-Star was unable to sign a long-term contract when he was a free agency last year. He and the Mets reached an agreement that lets him opt out at the end of this season. Alonso placed a wager on himself and is expected to profit.
He has put a lot of pressure on the Mets to keep him in Queens because he is enjoying a fantastic season. Although he admitted that it is now the team’s responsibility to keep him there, he is still adored by the supporters. This offseason, he is expected to be among the most sought-after athletes. Alonso declared, “I love the city of New York,” following his momentous evening. “This fan base is amazing. It’s been fantastic. If they decide to take a different route, the business is the business side. This place has been a true delight and joy for me.
The Mets’ ensemble and its members were praised by Alonso throughout his singing. He makes it apparent in his remarks that he would adore returning to Queens and possibly completing his career there. However, it will be up to Steve Cohen and David Stearns to determine whether to offer an older athlete a long-term contract.
Given that Alonso is now thirty years old, questions may arise over his capacity to maintain authority as he gets older. He is hitting for a far higher average this season than he did the previous two, which gives the Mets something to think about when it comes to his free agency.
