Noa Dalzell of CelticsBlog reports that Charles Bassey, a free agent big man, “would especially love to sign with the Celtics if the opportunity presented itself” and has no plans to play abroad any more.
Bassey’s Dreams of Boston Are Still Alive
The Nigerian center played in 113 NBA games over four seasons after being selected 53rd overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2021 NBA Draft. There were signs of promise during his most recent run with the San Antonio Spurs. Prior to an MCL injury that ended his season, he had impressive statistics of 15.0 points, 14.6 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per 36 minutes.
During Boston’s Summer League campaign, Bassey also showed promise, averaging 15.3 points and 11 rebounds in three games. League insiders claim that despite his brief consideration of a contract with Partizan Belgrade of Serbia, he is now totally intent on staying in the NBA, with Boston at the top of his list.
When asked what attracted him to the Celtics, Bassey responded, “It’s just the culture,” following his Summer League debut.
The Celtics’ roster status and financial limitations
Reunions are not always easy to achieve. The Celtics have one free roster slot after JD Davison was cut, but filling it would put them back over the second apron, a cap penalty that team president Brad Stevens has avoided at all costs.
In order to increase their financial flexibility, Boston has already moved away Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday this offseason. However, there is genuine desire in bringing Bassey back in spite of the limitations.
A Celtics executive told Spotrac, “This was an awesome run for him, considering he got added to our team so late.” “We would really like to continue working with Charles and try to work something out.”
Bassey Responds to the Celtics’ Explicit Need
Boston still needs size, rim protection, and rebounding because the only real frontcourt possibilities on the team right now are Xavier Tillman, Luka Garza, and Neemias Queta. Bassey brings precisely that.
