According to reports, forward Lindy Waters III has agreed to a one-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs, releasing another Detroit Pistons free agency.
As part of the five-team transaction that sent Jimmy Butler to Waters’ former team, the Golden State Warriors, the 27-year-old joined the Pistons last season.
Waters averaged 3.4 points and one rebound per game while playing as a substitute in 14 games with Detroit. He didn’t play for the Pistons in the playoffs.
Waters joined the Oklahoma City Blue in the NBA G League in 2021 after going undrafted out of Oklahoma State. He got a two-way deal in February 2022 after completing his debut NBA season with an average of eight points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
Eventually, Waters would agree to a multi-year deal with the Thunder. Over the course of three seasons, he participated in 104 games with the Thunder, scoring 5.3 points, pulling down 1.8 rebounds, and shooting 41.6% from the field.
Waters was acquired by the Warriors in 2024 for a second-round draft pick. Before being traded to the Pistons, he would play 38 games with Golden State, making nine starts.
Given his usage after being acquired and Detroit’s recruitment of Duncan Robinson during free agency, it was doubtful that Waters would re-sign with the Pistons, even if they still had room to add him for the upcoming campaign.
