Despite recent reports, Terry Rozier’s betting scandal may not be over just yet.
Rozier, the Miami Heat guard, has yet to be cleared of any wrongdoing, according to veteran NBA reporter Chris Haynes on Tuesday. According to Haynes, Rozier is still under federal investigation for a possible gambling offense.
This contradicts ESPN’s Shams Charania’s claim from a few weeks ago. Charania reported that Rozier had essentially been cleared following a federal investigation. Rozier, a 31-year-old former first-round draft pick, was first reported to be under investigation by federal officials in January for a possible sports betting scheme during the 2022-23 NBA season.
The alleged scam may have been linked to Jontay Porter’s illegal betting network. Porter, a former Toronto Raptors forward, was banned from the NBA for life and is now awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud (a federal crime) in connection with the illegal betting network.
When the Rozier incident broke in January, the NBA issued a statement stating that their own independent inquiry had revealed no violations of league rules. However, supporters on social media picked out alleged game evidence that made Rozier appear suspect.
Rozier, who averaged 10.6 points per game with 39/30/85 shooting splits last season, is still under contract with the Heat for $26.6 million next season. However, his NBA future appears to be quite dubious at this time, particularly considering the extensive breadth of the probe.
