The New York Mets entered the All-Star break with a commanding lead in the National League East division, thanks in large part to an incredible offseason. The team signed Juan Soto to the richest contract in Major League Baseball history, and Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes to the rotation. It also re-signed veteran pitcher Sean Manaea and added many relievers. But arguably the finest decision was to bring back franchise slugger Pete Alonso on a cheap contract. After lengthy talks, the Mets signed him to a two-year, $54 million contract with a player option after this season, and he has rewarded their decision with another All-Star season.
Mets owner Steve Cohen has already stated that Alonso appears to be planning to opt out of his contract, and that the team will need to renegotiate with him if it wants to keep him in Queens. However, in his own statements about the situation, Alonso left open the prospect of playing for another organization for the first time in his career.

“Yeah, this time around, like last year, there’s no guarantee,” Alonso told Martin. “We’ll see what happens business wise, nothing’s guaranteed, so we’ll see.” Of course, Alonso could alter his mind and stay with his present contract, especially if a major injury disrupts his season.
But, barring that eventuality, it appears he has decided on his future with the Mets or any other interested organization. His future team will need to strike a new deal.
