The New York Mets’ owner, Steve Cohen, recently dubbed their quartet of Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Francisco Lindor the “Fab Four.” The group may not be together after this season, however. Alonso has an opt-out after this season and is expected to hit the open market again, increasing the pressure to win this season. The prospect of losing Alonso may force the Mets to be aggressive at the trade deadline and capitalize on their current roster.
The Mets have a few holes that they might fill at the trade deadline, including third base. Following a successful season, the Mets certainly expected Mark Vientos to perform like a star this year.
That has not been the case, as FanSided’s Josh Mayer proposed that the Mets trade for Eugenio Suárez to transform their “Fab Four” into the “Fab Five.” Suárez was chosen an All-Star this season and will be a rental for the Mets. He’s slicing. 249/.317/556, 29 home runs. He may take over at third base, allowing the Mets to review the position in the offseason. Maybe Vientos will get back on track next year.
A trade for Suárez might benefit the Mets, but it would also be a crushing blow to their crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees. Bob Nightengale of USA Today stated recently that the Yankees “would love” to deal for Suárez.
The Yankees have struggled at third base all season, and with Jazz Chisholm Jr. returning to second base, the team needs a dependable player in the hot corner more than ever.
