MLB Deadline Steal: Padres Shocking Move To Hijack Rays Trade To Acquiring Sean Murphy From Atlanta Brave Before MLB Trade Deadline

The Braves have a lot to offer at the trade deadline, including many All-Stars, most notably Sean Murphy.

However, Alex Anthopoulos has been insistent that he will not trade any player with multiple years of control, and a report from Robert Murray echoed that sentiment today. Even so, interested clubs continue to call.

According to Jim Bowden, numerous teams, including the Padres and Rays, would like to acquire Sean Murphy from the Braves.

Braves bring Sean Murphy back from the IL, but catching timeshare remains in question

Sean Murphy may be the Braves’ most prized trade chip, aside from Chris Sale. He’s a top-10 catcher who has been under team control for the past half-decade at a very reasonable contract. On this type of contract, catchers who are both excellent defenders and plus hitters are in short supply.

It’s clear why other teams are calling, and the Braves should at least listen. With Drake Baldwin breaking out, Murphy’s move becomes much easier. Of course, there is a rationale to keep both because one might DH next year while the other catches, and Baldwin’s sample size is less than Murphy’s.

On another subject, the Braves have holes to fill, and if a Sean Murphy deal could result in a long-term solution at shortstop, Alex Anthopoulos would have to consider it, right?

It just so happens that San Diego and Tampa Bay have prospects who could interest the Braves: Leo De Vries and Carson Williams, respectively. Of course, they may be hesitant to part with those kitties.

Anthopoulos may not want to move any players with numerous years of control, but ignoring offers is malpractice.
