The Miami Heat changed things up on Monday morning when they acquired fringe All-Star guard Norman Powell from the Los Angeles Clippers in a bombshell three-team transaction that included the Utah Jazz, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The Clippers signed Utah’s standout forward John Collins, while the Jazz acquired second-round draft capital from the Heat’s Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson.
Powell may make a huge difference for the Heat as a go-to scoring option in the backcourt next season, partnering with first-time All-Star Tyler Herro, but it appears that the 25-year-old has yet to escape trade rumors.
While evaluating the crafty scoring guard’s possible trade worth in the aftermath of the Orlando Magic’s unexpected transaction to acquire Memphis Grizzlies’ Desmond Bane, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald made an unusual statement.
“Bane is considered a two-way player,” Jackson told X on Monday.
“Tyler could net 2 Firsts potentially.”
The former Grizzlies guard Bane was traded to the Magic on June 15 for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks, and a first-round pick swap, shaking up the market.
Surprisingly, Jackson believes the Heat will only receive a pair of first-round draft picks in trade for Herro, who averaged 23.9 points, 5.5 assists, and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 56.3% in 2024-25.
Bane did well in his final season with the Grizzlies, averaging 19.2 points and 5.3 assists while making 39.2% of his 6.1 three-point tries.
If the Heat ever considered trading Herro, team president Pat Riley and the front office would work feverishly to obtain as many draft picks as possible in exchange for the rising star, or a proven superstar who could keep the team competitive.
