The San Diego Padres’ pitching rotation is respectable, but not spectacular. They could use the services of another top star, and they may have to look to the trade block to find him. With Dylan Cease and Michael King’s contracts set to expire, the Padres could attempt to trade for a pitcher with many years of team control remaining. One pitcher on the trade block stands out from the rest like a sore thumb. R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports recently mentioned the Padres as a potential destination in a blockbuster trade for Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara.
“That doesn’t necessarily mean that teams will view Alcántara as being on the same level as he was prior to popping his UCL, when he had solidified himself as his generation’s workhorse starter, but it does mean his chances of impacting a pennant race are more favorable now than they were in May.” Alcántara joining the Padres makes perfect sense for San Diego. He has several years of team control remaining and might replace the exiting pair of Cease and King if they split up in free agency.

However, the Padres may not have enough prospect cash to pull off a major trade this season. Over the last two or three years, San Diego has sold away many of its finest prospects in order to acquire players such as Juan Soto and Tanner Scott. It is unknown whether the San Diego front staff will be prepared to trade additional top prospects to acquire Alcántara this season.
