The San Antonio Spurs needed to address three issues heading into the NBA summer of 2025. First, they needed to select Dylan Harper as the second overall pick. Check.
Second and third, they needed to round out their wing rotation with a 3-point threat who could defend, as well as a backup center. The Spurs were anticipated to make one pick in the draft and another in free agency.
With Carter Bryant’s arrival, the Spurs now have a 3-and-D wing with a high upside, and they will look to the open market for a center. Brook Lopez, Clint Capela, and even Guerschon Yabusele have all been mentioned as potential candidates, but Lopez appears to be the strongest option due to his shot-blocking and floor-spacing abilities.
However, the Spurs are not the only ones interested in him.
“Numerous rival teams are bracing for the center-craving Los Angeles Lakers to make a run at luring Lopez away from the Bucks,” NBA source Jake Fischer said. “Even if the Lakers plan to address their center void by pursuing Atlanta’s Clint Capela instead or perhaps a target not as frequently discussed, there is a growing belief Lopez will indeed be on the move next week.”
While the Spurs can offer more money, Los Angeles is a major media market with talents like as Luka Doncic and LeBron James, and the Lakers may be able to offer him more minutes.
In San Antonio, Lopez would serve as Victor Wembanyama’s backup. In Los Angeles, he would start, which is difficult to pass up on a championship-caliber team.
Lopez is far from the only center on the free agent market, but in a bidding war, the Silver and Black are likely to fall short.
