JUST NOW: Mets Officially Hijack and Beats Top Rivals Yankees To The Signing of Rookies $70 Million MLB All-Star

The New York Mets and the New York Yankees share certain commonalities. While they have performed reasonably well, the Mets and Yankees have similar needs at the trade deadline. Both contending teams should be looking for a starting pitcher.

With below-average play in the infield, both teams may be interested in adding an infielder. For the Yankees, that will have to come at third or second base to allow Jazz Chisholm Jr. to play the other position, while for the Mets, it will most likely come at third base to replace Brett Baty, who hasn’t been terrific in Major League Baseball. Baty has dominated Triple-A, but he appears to be struggling at the highest level.

Carlos Mendoza on Mets' first half of the season

When looking for potential trading partners, CBS Sports recently forecasted that the Yankees and Mets may engage in a bidding war for Ryan McMahon, whom they labeled the top trade target on the market this summer.

“There’s no telling what awaits the Rockies and the deadline, but McMahon is an intriguing and (to some extent) self-contradictory player. At first glance, his consistency appears to be part of his appeal: he is on track to extend his record of five seasons with an OPS+ of 93 to 98. With his strong defense at third base, he would be an excellent addition to most teams.

“I’d like to see what McMahon’s game looks like when he spends the season in more typical hitting conditions. Will I obtain my wish? Again, who knows? McMahon is approaching 30 and has only two seasons left on his deal, implying that the Rockies should act quickly or risk missing out on a good return. Potential landing locations include the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets,” they stated.

What Do the Mets Hope to Acquire By This Deadline?

According to recent reports, the New York Mets may not be looking to recruit a third baseman. According to The Athletic, the Mets are expected to look for a center fielder as well as some starting pitching help.

There will be some competition for starting pitchers, similar to what the New York Yankees faced.

“The Mets are looking for help in center field and the bullpen,” league sources said. Speculatively, other more expensive targets, such as a frontline starter, could emerge,” they added.

Could the Rockies trade Ryan McMahon?

The New York Yankees have been linked to McMahon several times in recent years. McMahon, who plays for the nasty Colorado Rockies, could be dealt, depending on what happens in the next weeks.

The Rockies are expected to sell, but if they don’t want to part ways with McMahon, they may not do so. It wouldn’t make much sense given that he’s set to hit free agency in two seasons and his value will most likely continue to decline as he approaches 30 years old, but the Rockies have done some questionable things, so the New York Mets and Yankees aren’t guaranteed to have a shot at trading for him.
