Why Would a Trade for Ja’Quan McMillan Make Sense for the Packers?
McMillan’s stock fell after a breakout 2023 season in which he had two interceptions and 51 tackles, owing to some modest regression in 2024. Nonetheless, he continues to add value in Denver, which recently signed his Exclusive Rights Tender earlier this offseason.
The most unusual aspect of the trade proposal is McMillan’s position as a nickel cornerback rather than an outside corner. And the Packers’ need is on the perimeter, where Alexander played the vast majority of snaps.
Nate Hobbs, a new free agency acquisition, is slated to go outside, leaving the nickel spot open. While safety Javon Bullard now occupies that position, McMillan gives competition and upside, as well as being more of a specialist in that field.
McMillan’s height, which is just shorter than 5’10, is considered a tad short for a traditional outside cornerback, yet he is the same height as Alexander, which is amusing. So, if the Packers make a run for McMillan, it is not impossible that he will play on the perimeter.
