As the San Antonio Spurs want to continue building around their young rising star Victor Wembanyama, how they handle free agency this week will be very interesting.
The Spurs finished 34-48 last season, although Wembanyama missed a substantial chunk of the second half after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, limiting the team’s success.
There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about next year. San Antonio will return major players such as De’Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Harrison Barnes. Chris Paul is the only big name entering free agency, leaving San Antonio room to add on the edges or perhaps upgrade its starting lineup if the proper opportunity arises.
According to Jake Fischer, writing as a guest on Marc Stein’s Substack newsletter, one of the players they appear to be interested in pursuing in free agency is Guerschon Yabusele, who now plays for the Philadelphia 76ers. Yabusele is a French national who competed alongside Wemby at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
According to Fischer, San Antonio may also target Luke Kornet. The Sixers and Milwaukee Bucks are expected to compete for San Antonio’s French forward.
