The San Diego Padres are one of the league’s finest teams, but they still appear to be a step behind their rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, if the Padres can make a couple moves this season, they have a chance to catch and past the Dodgers, potentially taking the National League West from under their nose. Cameron Zunkel of Clutch Points recently advised the Padres to make a major trade for Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Mitch Keller this season.
“Mitch Keller does not become a free agent until after 2028. That means his price may be much higher due to his years of club control,” Zunkel stated. “Even with the higher price, Keller could be a great fit in San Diego, and he would immediately make an impact in the rotation.” The Pirates appear to be receptive to trading Keller as well. The Chicago Cubs are in contact about the starting pitcher, and if talks continue, it implies the Pirates will deal him for the correct price. San Diego should be the highest bidder in that instance.” Michael King and Dylan Cease are expected to hit free agency at the end of the season.
Acquiring an ace like Keller with team control on his contract would be extremely beneficial to the organization’s future. Adding Keller would also make the Padres significantly better right now. A top three of Keller, King, and Cease should be able to compete with any team in the league come October.
