JUST NOW: Yankees Swing Blockbuster Signing Of $70M All-Star Infielder From Colorado Rockies Ahead Of MLB Trade Deadline

The New York Yankees have a problem at second base, as DJ LeMahieu has struggled both defensively and offensively. His play at second base is also harming the Yankees at third base, as Jazz Chisholm is a much stronger defender than him at second base but not so terrific on the hot corner, where he is required to play. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Yankees could want to trade for a third baseman at the deadline. Adding a new face to the hot corner would move LeMahieu to the bench, allowing Chisholm to return to second base. Nick Selbe of Sports Illustrated predicted that the Yankees would trade for Colorado Rockies player Ryan McMahon.

MLB rumors: Yankees slapped with harsh Ryan McMahon trade reality

Selbe identified the Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals, and Seattle Mariners as potential bidders for McMahon. He was an All-Star last season and has hit 20 or more home runs in five straight full seasons. He is on track to achieve it again this year. Last season, he hit.242/.325/.397 with 20 home homers. This year, his average is down to.221, but his OPS is significantly higher. The Rockies are preparing to sell at the deadline, and McMahon may earn them a decent price. He is under club control until 2027, after signed a six-year, $70 million contract in 2022. He plays excellent defense and has received All-Star recognition. He might be a significant contributor to the Yankees’ lineup.

Chisholm has slashed.329/.390/.548 since returning from the injured list, but his fielding at third base has been erratic. Having McMahon play third base would allow the Yankees to get the best out of Chisholm in the field and at the plate.
