According to insiders, the Los Angeles Lakers are making one of their most audacious trade attempts in the team’s history this summer, aiming for Miami Heat All-Star center Bam Adebayo. With Luka Dončić solidified as the purple and gold’s co-star and LeBron James recommitting to the team for his 23rd NBA season, the Lakers feel they are only missing one key player to become a serious contender for a championship. That player is Adebayo.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has reportedly made “discreet but aggressive” queries regarding Adebayo’s availability, according to several league sources. The Heat aren’t actively looking to add a big man to their roster, but it’s said that L.A. is prepared to make a huge offer that might include Austin Reaves, several first-round selections,
and salary fillers like Jarred Vanderbilt or Rui Hachimura.
One executive told ESPN, “A deal like this would instantly change the trajectory of the Western Conference.” “The Lakers would be able to fill the exact void left by the loss of Dwight [Howard] in his prime thanks to Bam’s defense, versatility, and toughness.”
The 27-year-old Adebayo just finished a season leading one of the league’s best defensive units with averages of 19.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. He is a perfect fit with James and Dončić because he can guard all five spots and contribute offensively without having to dominate the ball.
The trade is not risk-free for the Lakers. Fans who have watched Reaves develop into a reliable two-way starter would be devastated if he were to go. But in their quest for Banner No. 18, the front management seems prepared to make tough choices.
The executive office may have been more aggressive than usual because of LeBron’s apparent willingness to accept a pay reduction in order to provide the organization flexibility. With JJ Redick entering his first season as head coach, adding Adebayo might serve as the defensive anchor for Redick’s modern, movement-heavy scheme.
It’s unclear if the Heat will accept the offer. However, there is no doubt that the rest of the NBA will have to pay attention if the Lakers get Bam Adebayo.
