With good reason, the Detroit Lions are currently among the NFL’s most well-known teams. Naturally, the biggest shift is that, following the Lions’ successful 2024 season, the team lost two key personnel at the same time: offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. They also lost a few assistant coaches.
With Aaron Glenn with the New York Jets and Johnson joining the Chicago Bears, Dan Campbell has a completely new coaching staff.
As a result, everyone is watching Detroit to see what they can accomplish without these key players.
The Lions are now expected to make a significant move regarding their quarterback room before September.
The Detroit Lions’ New Quarterback Room
Chris Schad pushes the Lions to acquire a new backup quarterback in place of Jared Goff in an article published on Sunday, June 22, for FanSided’s Detroit Jock City.
“Hendon Hooker, a 2023 third-round pick, didn’t improve in his sophomore year, but Goff is solidly established as Detroit’s franchise quarterback,” he said. “Kyle Allen was also signed by the Lions to offer competition, but he has been inconsistent when used, finishing with a 7-12 starting record and an 82.3 passer rating in his seven-year career.”
He recommends that the Lions consider making a trade for the Las Vegas Raiders’ Aidan O’Connell. O’Connell was selected by Josh McDaniels and the Las Vegas Raiders in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. “He had plenty of opportunity to start in both seasons, and his tenure carried over into Antonio Pierce’s one season as head coach,” Schad says.
There might be a chance to deal now that Pete Carroll is the Raiders’ new head coach. “It may seem easy, but Detroit should be searching for a quarterback who can make the right choice at the right time,” Schad says.
He continues by saying that “it may be worth giving up the late-round pick to bring O’Connell to Detroit” if Hooker and Allen are unable to “advantage of elite weapons such as Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Jameson Williams.”
This would be an unexpected move because O’Connell isn’t a name that has been spoken much in relation to bringing him to Detroit.
An Additional Option for a Quarterback
Michael Bohlin also recommends acquiring a new Q2 for the Lions in an article published on Saturday, June 21 in the same journal. He explains in the article that although Goff is unquestionably one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, the situation behind him on the depth chart is much murkier because the only other options on the roster are Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen, neither of whom has the track record to convince fans that they could step in and keep the Lions offense moving with the precision Goff does.
