According to reports, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz have begun initial trade negotiations focused on forwards John Collins and Rui Hachimura in a move that would upend the Western Conference. Both teams are carefully considering the possible advantages of a trade involving the two former lottery picks, though league sources say talks are still in the early phases.
The Lakers’ 2022–2023 playoff run was greatly aided by Rui Hachimura, a 26-year-old who was acquired from the Washington Wizards. In the 2024–25 season, Hachimura, who is renowned for his mid-range shooting and defensive adaptability, averaged 13.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
Hachimura’s salary and skill set, however, can be viewed as a trade asset given the Lakers’ desire to restructure their squad around LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Before the 2023–24 season, 26-year-old John Collins left the Atlanta Hawks to join the Utah Jazz. Even though he only averaged 12.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in Utah, Collins is still a dynamic forward who can finish above the basket and spread the floor. Moving Collins would fit with Utah’s long-term goals as they are still in the early stages of development and are focusing on young players like Walker Kessler and Keyonte George.
Given that both players are on multi-year contracts with comparable annual values but not exactly matching ones, salary cap issues and other factors may make the deal more difficult.
The discussions show that the Lakers are aggressively looking into ways to improve their frontcourt and provide more shooting and athleticism to their aging core. Hachimura might be seen by the Jazz as a future trade piece or as a better long-term fit with their youthful core.
League insiders indicate that both teams are keen to make changes this offseason, even though no deal is likely. There may soon be more clarity as the NBA Draft and free agency get near.
