The Washington Commanders are looking to start the 2025 NFL season off strong after making a run all the way to the NFC Championship game previous year. The Commanders, led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, went on a surprising run. At the start of the season, they weren’t even considered a top-tier playoff contender. Despite the surprise, Washington was a serious Super Bowl contender. In 2025, the team plans to build on its success and take it to the next level. There is one situation to keep an eye on as training camp and preseason activity begin.
Terry McLaurin will need a new contract soon, but in the meanwhile, he has chosen not to attend offseason training.
Jordan Schultz, a Fox Sports NFL insider, made the revelation regarding McLaurin. “All-Pro wide receiver Terry McLaurin was out at practice today as offseason exercises continued. He was a full participant earlier and is now in the final year of his contract,” Schultz wrote on X. “Worth monitoring as Phase 3 of Washington’s program kicks off in under a week.” McLaurin was Daniels’ primary target last season. Without him on the field, the Commanders’ offense would take a huge step in the wrong direction.
In 17 games during the 2024 season, McLaurin had 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. There is no way Washington can replace that level of production.
Add in the fact that the Commanders signed Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers to partner with McLaurin, and the organization plainly needs to figure something out with the 29-year-old standout. If no extension is reached, McLaurin will be in the final year of his current contract when the 2025 NFL season begins. Washington appears to be on track to complete something with him before the new year begins.
McLaurin has appeared in 97 games for the Commanders. He has 460 receptions for 6,379 yards and 38 touchdowns. During that time, he was considered one of the NFL’s most underrated players. Hopefully, the two sides will be able to reach an agreement swiftly and without any tensions increasing.
