The San Diego Padres have signed slugging first baseman Pete Alonso to a blockbuster long-term deal worth $207 million. The six-year pact comes on the heels of a dramatic contract fallout between Alonso and the New York Mets, his home for the past six seasons.
Alonso, a fan favorite in Queens and a two-time Home Run Derby champion, had long been expected to be a cornerstone of the Mets’ future. But recent months saw tensions mount between the power hitter and Mets’ front office over the terms of a possible extension. The situation came to a head this offseason when talks officially broke down, prompting Alonso to test the market.
Enter the Padres.
With a front office hungry to capitalize on their championship window, San Diego swooped in aggressively, offering a mega-deal that both shocked the league and signaled their intent to chase a World Series title in 2025. The deal reportedly includes a full no-trade clause and performance incentives that could push the total value even higher.
“We believe Pete Alonso is the type of player who can transform a lineup and bring leadership to our clubhouse,” said Padres GM A.J. Preller. “This move shows our commitment to bringing a championship to San Diego.”
Alonso brings with him a resume that includes 192 career home runs, three All-Star appearances, and a reputation as one of the most feared bats in baseball. He joins a Padres lineup already featuring stars like Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, forming what could be one of the most dangerous batting orders in the National League.
Padres fans have erupted with excitement, while Mets supporters are left stunned by the departure of a franchise icon. As Spring Training approaches, all eyes will be on San Diego—and the pressure will be on for Alonso to deliver on his hefty price tag.
The Padres have made their move. Now, the World Series dreams are alive—and very real.
