So it should have come as no surprise when the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy agreed to a hefty five-year contract for $265 million on Friday, May 16, according to ESPN and the NFL Network. Sure, he was “Mr. Irrelevant,” but the Niners couldn’t let him go.

Remember, when Goff signed his contract with the Detroit Lions during the 2024 offseason, he signed a four-year, $212 million extension, making him the highest-paid athlete in Detroit Lions history and the sixth-highest paid quarterback in the NFL by AAV. Purdy’s per-year compensation now ties him with Mr. Goff for the seventh highest salary among NFL quarterbacks. They both receive $53 million each year.

Of course, Lions fans recall Purdy and the 49ers smashing the Lions that season and advancing to the Super Bowl after a wild comeback victory. It’s difficult to shake that memory.
Purdy has completed 67.5 percent of his attempts for 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions since taking over at quarterback for the 49ers in 2022. He also finished fourth in the NFL MVP vote in 2023.
