ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons have made a major move to bolster their defense just weeks ahead of training camp. In a surprise free-agent signing, the Falcons have officially completed the acquisition of former Pro Bowl defensive end Danielle Hunter, just days after his unexpected release from the Minnesota Vikings.
The signing, confirmed by team officials early Monday morning, marks a significant upgrade for Atlanta’s pass rush, which struggled to generate consistent pressure in 2024. Hunter, a four-time Pro Bowler with 87.5 career sacks, brings instant credibility and veteran leadership to a young Falcons defensive line.
“Danielle is a proven force on the edge, and his addition immediately changes the complexion of our defense,” Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to add a player of his caliber and character to our locker room.”
Hunter was released by the Vikings in a surprising salary-cap-related move last week, despite coming off another strong season in which he recorded 14.5 sacks and 22 tackles for loss. While several teams reportedly reached out to his representatives, the Falcons moved quickly, offering a two-year deal worth up to $36 million, with $24 million guaranteed.
For Atlanta, the move signals a win-now mentality under new head coach Raheem Morris, who has emphasized aggression on defense throughout offseason workouts.
Hunter is expected to slot in opposite rising star Arnold Ebiketie, giving the Falcons a dangerous edge-rushing tandem that could wreak havoc in the NFC South.
“I’m excited for this next chapter,” Hunter said during his introductory press conference. “Atlanta showed me they believe in my ability to help them win now, and I’m ready to get to work.”
The move also reunites Hunter with Falcons defensive line coach Gary Emanuel, who briefly coached him during his early NFL career. With training camp approaching, Atlanta fans now have even more reason for optimism as the team continues to reshape its identity on both sides of the ball.
Hunter is expected to join team workouts later this week as he settles into his new role in Atlanta’s defense.
