Not because the Colorado Rockies had finally won a game, but because manager Bud Black had been fired hours later, the baseball world was taken aback. Dave Roberts, the manager of the Dodgers, however, expressed what many in the league were thinking, although loudly, harshly, and without any filter.
Roberts didn’t hold back in a postgame press conference that swiftly descended into a scathing condemnation.
“Firing Bud Black following an uncommon victory? “That’s not brave,” he said. They simply threw him away like garbage, despite the fact that he is a renowned veteran and a leader in this league. Not a class. Lack of loyalty
However, Roberts’ career did not end with the Rockies. His true rage was aimed at Major League Baseball and what he perceives to be a leadership void that permits such actions.“This league keeps letting this garbage slide,” he went on. “Where’s the accountability? Where’s the leadership? You’ve got franchises making clown moves, and MLB just shrugs.” Roberts’ tirade quickly went viral on social media, with fans from all over the league, particularly in San Diego and Colorado, joining the fray. While some applauded his candor, others accused him of going too far, but there’s no denying that the firing of Bud Black, who managed the Rockies for eight seasons and once led the Padres, left players stunned and the media scrambling for explanations.
It became personal for Roberts, who played for Black when they were in San Diego.
“I learned how to lead from Bud. How to win honorably,” Roberts stated. “And this now? MLB need to feel ashamed.
A comment from the league has not yet been released. Beyond a brief statement expressing gratitude to Black for his service, the Rockies say nothing.
Roberts’ message, however, is very clear: baseball’s culture of loyalty is eroding, and the league’s silence is contributing to the issue.
