The Carolina Panthers’ stunning decision to release veteran Jadeveon Clowney might pave the way for the ideal Atlanta Falcons signing. The team’s whole summer has been focused on rebuilding the defense and revitalizing the pass rush. The most significant offseason acquisition was veteran pass rusher Leonard Floyd. This was followed by a blockbuster draft in which the Falcons selected two first-round pass rushers, Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr.
Still, it’s unclear how much Walker and Pearce will produce in their rookie seasons. Having more seasoned depth would be a wise decision, and there is no greater move than snatching from a division opponent.
With this in mind, keeping Clowney in the NFC South would be a wise offseason move for Atlanta.
Jadeveon Clowney would be an ideal addition to the Falcons’ current pass-rushing options.
Clowney spent last season in Carolina, where he recorded 5.5 sacks despite playing on a broken defense. Clowney spent the previous season in Baltimore, where he recorded 9.5 sacks while playing among the elite Ravens core. There’s cause to wonder if the veteran can still reach these heights with the right fit.
Atlanta sees this as an opportunity to not only steal a crucial division opponent, but also to add much-needed depth to their position. Bralen Trice and Arnold Ebiketie are both unproven wildcards, while Leonard Floyd is the lone edge rusher with a track record of success. Bringing in Clowney ensures that you have potential starting options in case Atlanta’s young pass rushers do not develop as planned.
Even if everything goes as planned, having Clowney as a rotational edge rusher would be a huge help in strengthening what was formerly the team’s weakest position group. It is a move worth considering following the veteran’s stunning release in Carolina.
