OFFICIAL VERDICT: Atlanta Falcons Make Official Decision on Future Of Quarterback Kirk Cousins

According to sources, Kirk Cousins is expected to open the 2025 NFL season as the Atlanta Falcons’ backup quarterback.

However, the 36-year-old’s wealth of experience ensures he will be ‘the first call’ if another team’s quarterback is injured or Aaron Rodgers decides to retire.

Cousins’ future has been a source of debate since he was benched in favor of youngster Michael Penix Jr. at the end of last season. He had been connected to a move away from Atlanta and was recently seen visiting a Chipotle near the Cleveland Browns practice facility. Cousins has made it obvious that he wants to be a starter and has reportedly asked Falcons owner Arthur Blank to release him.

However, free agency and the draft have passed without Cousins finding a new home – or the Falcons acquiring another quarterback.

‘As of this now, it clearly appears Kirk Cousins will be their backup quarterback for the 2025 season,’ NFL source Ian Rapoport stated.
Obviously, if any team needs a quarterback with starting experience, including the Pittsburgh Steelers if Aaron Rodgers does not return, Cousins would be the first call.

‘We’re going to be talking about Kirk Cousins a lot in preseason and during the season; every time a quarterback goes hurt, the Falcons will be like, “Hello!” “Look at the guy we have!”

‘They may acquire a premium draft selection for a player who is now their backup. All of that is for the future; Cousins is now based in Atlanta.

The 36-year-old earned a $100 million guaranteed contract last year, but Atlanta drafted Penix Jr. No. 8 overall just six weeks later. Cousins previously played for the Minnesota Vikings and then-Washington Redskins.
