“It’s very hard threading the needle,” Marks added. “They’ve been a Play-In team for the past few years. Would they ever contemplate taking a step back, similar to the Oklahoma City approach? Consider bringing back a core player and using draft picks to move forward. They will remain where they are in a year if nothing changes here. It may be necessary to take a step back rather than chase the stars.”
Miami would benefit from taking a step back now to make long-term improvements. The current roster isn’t capable of making noise in the playoffs. As a result, embracing a rebuilding period could be the best decision for the franchise’s long-term success.
Of course, it may be difficult to convince Riley to accept that reality, but that doesn’t stop it from being true.
