The basketball world was heartbroken to learn that Gregg Popovich had opted to quit as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs after an iconic 22-year reign that includes five NBA championships.
Popovich, 76, has been gone from the team since a big health scare many months ago. On November 2, the famed shot-caller suffered a slight stroke, forcing him to miss the rest of the season.
The good news is that Popovich will remain involved with the Spurs. In reality, the franchise announced on Friday that Popovich, who resigned as head coach, will now serve as president of basketball operations.
On Monday, the Spurs held an introductory press conference to officially announce Popovich in his new job. Popovich revealed alongside two Spurs luminaries, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, that he is no longer Coach Pop and will instead be known as “El Jefe,” which translates to “The Boss” in Spanish.
The NBA simply had to react to the major news.
“New role, same Pop 😂👏” the NBA said on X.
The NBA released images and video of Popovich’s dramatic announcement. It saw the Spurs legend removing his jacket with the assistance of two Hall of Fame players whom he coached to a combined nine titles, revealing his new “El Jefe” title.
Popovich also took the opportunity to thank the Spurs organization for not just the promotion, but also for all of their help throughout his health crisis.
“I can never express the gratitude that I have for so many people caring about the organization and sending me thoughts and prayers, that sort of thing, since I had this stroke,” Popovich told the crowd.
Popovich will now usher in a new era in San Antonio, one that will be led by none other than 21-year-old sensation Victor Wembanyama.
The future of this renowned franchise appears to be bright.
