On April 24, Outkick’s Armando Salguero claimed that the Commanders had approached the Miami Dolphins about a possible trade for 3-time NFL All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who has stated that he prefers to play for a title contender.
“The Dolphins have talked to the Rams, Falcons, Lions, Commanders, Eagles and others,” according to Salguero. “The issue here isn’t draft compensation. If Ramsey is traded, he may fetch a fifth-round pick or something close to that. The issue is that Miami would have to swallow $25.2 million in dead cap if the deal occurs before June 1.
So any team looking to make this trade today may be asked to provide the Dolphins with some cap relief on that figure.”
On April 15, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported that Ramsey and the Dolphins were discussing trade possibilities.
“The #Dolphins and seven-time Pro Bowl CB Jalen Ramsey are mutually set to explore trade options, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he played elsewhere in 2025, per me and (Pelissero),” Rapoport wrote on his official X account on April 15. “Miami and Ramsey, owed $25.1 million fully guaranteed this season, could be parting ways…
While there is no clear timeline for a potential trade, with the NFL Draft just 9 days away, making a trade before the draft would make sense — if only so Miami could use the selection or picks acquired for Ramsey.”
Commanders Would Likely Release Lattimore for Trade
Obtaining Ramsey would need more than one move, most likely a series of moves. The first would be freeing up salary budget room to put Ramsey and his $25.1 million salary on the books — even if that’s not the final figure — which would most likely entail cutting veteran cornerback Marshon Lattimore and saving $16 million in salary cap space.
Then there’s what Ramsey comes back from a trade. In this example, the Dolphins demand a draft pick, and the Commanders only have five this year. In this instance, Ramsey would still be worth trading their 2025 fourth-round pick (No. 128 overall).
There’s also the possibility that a team will want to trade up for the Commanders’ No. 29 overall pick in the first round, giving Washington an extra draft pick that they could potentially trade for Ramsey.
According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Cleveland Browns may be one of the teams hoping to acquire an extra first-round pick. According to Yates’ prediction, the Commanders will trade the No. 29 overall pick in the first round to the Browns in return for the Browns’ second round pick (No. 34 overall) and a fourth round pick (No. 104 overall), allowing them to select Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
Ramsey, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ No. 5 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, is a 7-time Pro Bowler who has been one of the NFL’s most dominant cornerbacks over the last decade, including a Super Bowl victory with the Los Angeles Rams following the 2021 season.
Ramsey’s career earnings across nine seasons are around $118.2 million.
