Among the many concerns in Atlanta’s ongoing stalemate with veteran Kirk Cousins are the few options available if Cousins is cut or dealt. If the Falcons aren’t serious about keeping Cousins as their backup for the 2025 season, they’ll have very few options. This is far from ideal, given Penix’s injury history and lack of experience. Perhaps this is the best reason for why the team should seriously consider keeping Cousins.
Nonetheless, Cousins is clearly dissatisfied with his current predicament. Whether it’s a trade or a release, it appears that Cousins will wear a different uniform. With this in mind, Atlanta will need to find a competent backup for second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
Carson Wentz is Atlanta’s best backup option in an unimpressive market.
Carson Wentz is the last remaining option with the potential to be a viable starter. It’s easy to forget how popular Wentz was before Nick Foles’ improbable Super Bowl run.
Before suffering an injury, the quarterback was projected to be the future of the Philadelphia Eagles and had performed at MVP levels. From the outside, it seemed that Foles taking over harmed Wentz’s confidence, and the quarterback was never the same afterward.
Making stops with the Commanders and Colts as a starter, Wentz was never able to fully revert to the player he previously was. Still, having the quarterback as a backup is beneficial. If the Falcons aren’t serious about moving forward with Cousins as their backup quarterback, they should sign Wentz.
If the Falcons are ready to make Cousins uncomfortable, there is no reason to bring in the former Eagle. This all depends on how the Falcons handle the issue with Cousins and whether they believe a trade is conceivable. Regardless, if Kirk is not going to be sitting behind Penix in the 2025 season, the team needs to make a decision soon because they are quickly running out of options.
