The way the Los Angeles Lakers have been able to restructure their roster this summer has put them in a strong position for success the following season. The efforts of Luka Doncic, who allegedly assisted in luring Marcus Smart to Los Angeles, were a major factor in their ability to take innovative actions.
Long before the news of his new contract leaked, Doncic was working behind the scenes to help the players around him get better. He inked a three-year extension with the organization earlier this month. Before learning that he would be joining the Lakers on a two-year, $11 million contract, Doncic called Smart several times, according to Broderick Turner of Yahoo Sports.
You want your top athlete to have that kind of commitment to putting matters into his own hands. This is just more proof that Doncic is developing into the person he has been shown to be in his new role with the Lakers.
Marcus Smart joined the Los Angeles Lakers thanks in part to Luka Doncic.
During his time with the Dallas Mavericks, Luka may not have been heavily involved in decision-making, but his style is obviously evolving, and in a positive way. Before Marcus signed on in LA, Doncic and Smart already respected one another, which probably made their first exchanges even more productive.
Smart ultimately decided to join the Lakers as a result of those phone conversations. The fan base should therefore be very appreciative of Doncic’s initiative in attempting to enhance the roster.
Everyone was aware that the Lakers would desperately need another capable point-of-attack defender. After Dorian Finney-Smith left, it was their largest roster need, and Smart’s defensive savvy should fill that gap flawlessly.
We can all see why talented players would want to play with number 77, but it’s a whole other matter when you consider Luka Doncic going out and recruiting players on his own initiative. That suggests a great general direction for this Lakers squad under the guidance of its new franchise player, as well as a tremendous desire to win.
