JUST NOW: Spurs, De’Aaron Fox agree to 4-year, $229 Million Max Extension, A Franchise Record Breaking Bombshell Contract Extension

De’Aaron Fox and the San Antonio Spurs reached an agreement on a four-year, $229 million contract extension one day after he became eligible. The extension will begin with the 2026–2027 season and last through 2030. In addition, Shams claims that Fox is a Spur for the next five years unless he is traded because there isn’t a team or player option in the fourth year.

The Spurs only lost Tre Jones, Zach Collins, Sidy Cissoko, and three first-round picks in the steal-of-a-deal Fox made when he arrived in San Antonio in February, ahead of the trade deadline. The Spurs’ sole own pick was the 2027. In the same transaction, Jordan McLaughlin was also acquired by the Spurs.

Before being sidelined for pinkie surgery, Fox averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, and 1.5 steals in just five games with Victor Wembanyama and 17 games overall. The two looked enticing together in that brief preview of their future.

The Spurs’ decision to give him the maximum amount of money without offering him a player option demonstrates their confidence in him as their primary guard going forward and their disregard for positional overlap with Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, two up-and-coming players. Devin Vassell-skeptics may stop wringing their hands because Fox is now the highest paid Spur in team history thanks to the agreement. However, that will soon change as Wemby becomes eligible for an extension next summer, which would take effect for the 2027–2028 campaign.
