At the trade deadline, the New York Mets might be searching for depth in their starting rotation. The Arizona Diamondbacks’ Zac Gallen could be able to help them get back on track.
Gallen has a 3.20 ERA in 93 starts from 2022–2024. In 22 starts this season, he has a 5.60 ERA and has allowed a career-high 23 home runs. After the season, he will be a free agent and might be added to the Mets’ rotation. David Peterson, Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, Sean Manaea, and Kodai Senga are currently with the Mets.
Although the Mets have a strong rotation, they might be open to taking a risk on Gallen. James Nolan of FanSided proposed that the Mets utilize Mark Vientos to get Gallen, while Andy Martino of SNY stated that the team is “open” to moving him.
“New York has proven to help pitchers regain their form with their pitching lab,” Nolan stated. “Luis Severino from the previous season is a good illustration of this. They would have an incredible rotation if they think they can help Gallen get back to his former level. The Mets could benefit from these low-risk moves, but if they deal Vientos for Gallen, they could backfire. They might suffer long-term consequences if they lose a young player who was essential to their incredible 2024 season for a player who would only be with them for a few months. Whether Vientos will be relocated by the deadline is still up in the air, but the closer it gets, the more sense it makes.”
The Mets’ ability to fox Gallen is not assured. But there’s also no assurance that Vientos will ever be able to duplicate his season from the previous year. In the regular season, he hit 27 home runs with an OPS of.837; in October, he hit five home runs with an OPS of.998.
Vientos, who is under club control until 2030, would not be traded for Gallen outright by the Mets. The Mets would probably get a young player from him as well.
