After a brief boycott, star wide receiver Terry McLaurin returned to training camp on Sunday but was placed on the PUP list due to an ankle issue. The Washington Commanders are negotiating McLaurin’s contract situation.
As he approaches the last year of his current contract, which calls for a base salary of $15.5 million with a $25 million cap hit, McLaurin is looking for a new deal.
According to the most recent information provided by ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter, who was covering the situation during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, the 29-year-old is looking for a better contract. He wants one that is larger than the one DK Metcalf received from the Steelers following his trade by the Seahawks this offseason.
Schefter said the following:
“It’s been vast,” Schefter remarked of the distance in negotiations between McLaurin and the Commanders.
“DK Metcalf, who received roughly $33 million annually, was in the same draft class as Terry McLaurin, in my opinion. Terry wants far more than that, and I don’t think he’s ready to accept anything less than that. We will ultimately see what it comes in at. They’re not there yet, Washington. They cherish and love Terry McLaurin, but they do it at a different cost.
Although Schefter stated that he does not believe a new contract is imminent, he did make it apparent that he thinks McLaurin will probably be asking for a wage that is higher than Metcalf’s average of $33 million each year.
Throughout his six-year career, McLaurin has been a reliable weapon for the Commanders, regardless of the quarterback on the squad. The two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver was Jayden Daniels’ top target in his first season and just finished with 82 receptions, 1,096 yards, and 13 touchdowns.
them will be hoping that a deal can be reached, but Schefter’s most recent information doesn’t give them hope that this story is coming to an end.
