At the trade deadline, the Atlanta Braves will probably be looking to sell. Players who are about to expire, such as veteran Marcell Ozuna, are now up for trade. Despite his great talent, Ozuna is not a viable trade asset for Atlanta, making him one of the league’s most intriguing trade pieces. Chris Landers of FanSided recently forecast that the Braves would acquire prospect Ryan Bergert in exchange for Ozuna from the San Diego Padres. “With Sean Murphy not only off the trade block but serving as a catcher/DH tandem with young Drake Baldwin on seemingly a nightly basis, the writing is on the wall for Ozuna as he plays out the final year of his contract with the Atlanta Braves,” Landers stated.
“And it’s true that Ozuna has struggled mightily at the plate of late, with a .562 OPS since June 1.” We know, however, that Ozuna is still a tremendous hitter when he is correct. Additionally, Trenton Brooks isn’t performing well at DH right now, so the Padres could really use a lift. Ozuna may never fully recover from his persistent hip problem, but his price is unbeatable, and he’s a risk worth taking that can provide San Diego with a much-needed boost.” Ozuna’s move to the Braves makes sense. After the season, he is unlikely to re-sign in Atlanta because his contract is about to expire.
