At linebacker, Philadelphia Eagles supporters were given both good and bad news.
Before the Eagles’ first training camp practice, head coach Nick Sirianni gave the media an update on injured linebackers Nakobe Dean and Jihaad Campbell. The good news is that Campbell has returned and is prepared for camp. Dean will be added to the PUP list since he is not yet able to leave.
During the offseason, Campbell underwent surgery to repair a torn Labrum. After suffering a ruptured patellar tendon injury during the NFC Wild Card game against the Green Bay Packers, Dean is still recuperating.
How to handle injury updates for the Eagles’ linebackers
It’s huge news to learn that Campbell, a rookie first-round choice, will be practicing. Vic Fangio, the defensive coordinator for the Eagles, initially believed that Campbell wouldn’t return until mid-August during summer exercises. The young linebacker will now have the opportunity to practice on the field.
Campbell won’t immediately be on the first team. Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who covered for Dean during offseason workouts, should still receive that honor.
While not entirely unexpected, Dean’s lack of readiness to leave was disappointing. His readiness for the Eagles’ Week 1 game against the Dallas Cowboys may be up in the air.
Trotter has been stepping in as the starter and appears to be in a position where he can step in if Dean isn’t ready to go. There will be no rush to get Campbell on the field, regardless of the linebacker position. Due to his absence from OTA sessions, he will be gradually added to the rotation.
Although the linebacker position will be one to observe during training camp, the team can rest easy knowing that all of its rookies will be working out at the most crucial time of the year.
