I’m going back across town, Rico Garcia. The New York Mets, who cut the journeyman right-hander on July 11, claimed him off waivers two days after the New York Yankees designated him for assignment. The first person to mention the shift on Twitter/X on Monday was Ari Alexander of Houston’s KPRC2. Garcia pitched 2.2 innings out of the bullpen on Friday in Atlanta, marking his lone appearance in pinstripes. The following day, he was assigned after giving up three runs.
In the past four seasons, Garcia, 31, has played for five different clubs, including both New York teams in the past month. There are no minor league possibilities left for him.
Garcia was only with the Yankees for a brief period of time. Garcia gave up a backbreaking home run to Ozzie Albies in a bullpen game against the Braves on Friday, one of several relievers to take the mound. The subsequent 7-3 victory for Atlanta was guaranteed by the three-run blitz.
Earlier this season, Garcia pitched 4.2 innings without giving up a run in two major league games with the Mets. He struck out three batters, gave up just one hit, and did not walk a batter. At Triple-A Syracuse, Garcia also had 24 appearances, all but two of which came from the bullpen. In 30.1 innings pitched, he struck out 37 batters and walked 20 while going 0-1 with a 4.45 ERA.
