Even though the New York Yankees defeated the Atlanta Braves on Sunday to win their series, several of their main worries heading into the All-Star break still appear to be there. When Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna threw out Jorbit Vivas in a highlight throw on Friday, the Yankees suffered a crushing defeat, primarily because to some subpar base running in the series. That play has only fueled requests for a new infielder, and the Yankees have been pushed to acquire an upgrade for Vivas at the trade deadline. Additionally, Jim Bowden of The Athletic has put out an intriguing trade proposal involving the New York Mets as the Yankees look into their alternatives for an outside addition.
“Maybe there’s even a deal to be had with the crosstown Mets, who could offer Mark Vientos for Jasson Dominguez or Cody Bellinger or perhaps Brett Baty for Trent Grisham,” wrote Bowden. “There just aren’t a lot of sellers at this trade deadline, so GMs will have to get creative; GM Brian Cashman has a long track record of doing that.” The most fascinating trade that Bowden suggested if Cashman truly wants to go creative in a deal with the Mets would be to exchange Bellinger for Vientos. Since joining the Yankees through a trade this past winter, Bellinger has performed admirably; but, he has a $25 million player option for the next season and may be getting ready to opt out.
Although Vientos had a great season at third base the previous season and has another year of pre-arbitration left, he appears to have regressed for the Mets this season. A shocking crosstown move like this might end up being advantageous for both teams if the Yankees believe he can be their third base option for many years to come and the Mets are seeking a more immediate outfield improvement.
