The Detroit Lions boast one of the most dreaded rushing offenses in the NFL, with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs spearheading the ground attack.
Detroit continues to add depth to the backfield by giving the coaching staff another weapon to consider during training camp, even if those two were in charge of the majority of the Lions’ carries during the previous campaign. A second-year rushing back who was a standout for the University of Tennessee before playing as a rookie for the Tennessee Titans this past season was acquired by Brad Holmes on Friday.
After kicking UDFA to the curb on Thursday, the Lions signed running back Jabari Small.
Anthony Tyus III, a native of Michigan, was sent packing by Detroit on Thursday after being diagnosed with a non-football condition, thereby waiving a hometown hero. The Lions swiftly signed Jabari Small to provide them access to training camp after his release created a slot for another running back.
Despite not playing for the Titans this past season, Small demonstrated during his time in the SEC that he is capable of making things happen when he has the ball in his hands. Small amassed 2,369 total yards on 451 touches and 26 touchdowns in 45 games for the Volunteers.
Once more, Small has little chance of making the 53-man roster at the end of camp. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Dan Campbell and company run this back with the same combination of four Lions running backs who are all returning for the 2025 season.
Small now has the chance to establish his value to the franchise, and he would be smart to take advantage of it regardless of how things ultimately turn out in Detroit. There is no doubt about it: Small will be eager to get going.
