The Chicago Bears are doing well financially. The team has a strong payroll, with all significant players signed to new contracts, despite not having as much cap space as previous years. There are currently no critical concerns to address. Credit should be paid to GM.
Ryan Poles has handled these issues with patience and expertise. His most notable accomplishment was securing star cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who was on the verge of leaving. The Bears successfully retained him at a very advantageous rate.
Last year, his annual salary of $19 million ranked him among the top five cornerbacks. Recent acquisitions of Patrick Surtain, Jaycee Horn, Sauce Gardner, and A.J. Terrell have pushed the team to 13th place. Johnson is now easily the best bargain.
Across the whole NFL. While the Bears are delighted, he may not be. Johnson revealed on The Rich Eisen Show that he is considering renegotiating his contract due to the market’s recent increase.
Jaylon Johnson wouldn’t be the first to attempt this.
Many high-value deals were signed by top players, but prices quickly increased. Many of them raised a fuss, requesting that their teams renegotiate the accords to
better fit what they believed they were worth. Jaylon Johnson appears to have similar plans. It’s unclear whether the Bears will listen. He is under contract for three more years, until 2027. The organization is under no duty to consider another compensation hike.
He consented to the transaction and received significant compensation. They have every right to expect him to fulfill his commitment.
Much of this is going to depend on how the upcoming season plays out. If Johnson maintains his All-Pro status, he may be able to further his demands.
