The Washington Commanders had a huge breakout season last year, coming within one win of the Super Bowl before losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. They are now making significant efforts to return to that location and advance the situation.
The Commanders reinforced their pass rush on Wednesday by signing famed edge rusher Von Miller in free agency, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Miller also gave Commanders supporters a sneak peek of himself in burgundy and gold in an Instagram post.
While Miller is past his prime, he remains a highly capable situational rusher and should provide a significant help to Washington’s pass rush, which was a relative weakness last season.
Miller is unlikely to play every down at this point in his career, but he can still have an impact on third downs in obvious passing situations. The Commanders’ attack was great last season, but Miller will help bring the defense closer to that level.
Miller is an eight-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro who will enter the Hall of Fame when he retires.
He leads all active players in career sacks (129.5), tackles for loss (171), and forced fumbles (27).
The former Denver Broncos standout also brings championship experience to this Commanders squad, which is looking to climb over the hump this autumn. He has two Super Bowl championships, one in 2015 with the Broncos and one in 2021 with the Los Angeles Rams, so he has been there and done that and should aid a young and inexperienced team.
Of course, Von Miller was voted the MVP of Super Bowl 50 during his tenure with the Broncos for his outstanding performance against the Carolina Panthers. While he won’t be able to replicate such performances on every down, a game like that one demonstrates Miller’s ability to influence a postseason game by getting to the quarterback.
