Under famous former head coach Gregg Popovich, the San Antonio Spurs were recognized for their unselfish, team-oriented playstyle. And with a new franchise cornerstone, Victor Wembanyama, in place, that identity is unlikely to change.
In recent weeks, several NBA superstars have been linked to San Antonio, including Kevin Durant, who was eventually moved to the Houston Rockets, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is still with the Milwaukee Bucks.
But should Tottenham have pursued a player of that caliber?
“No, I do not think so. Wembanyama told L’Equipe’s Maxime Aubin that breaking up your entire core for a single player rarely works.
And the Spurs are masters at assembling teams without bringing in too many big players or jeopardizing the group’s balance.”
San Antonio selected Wemby with the first overall pick in 2023, and the French wonder has rapidly lived up to the expectations.
He presently averages 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 3.7 blocks per game, and has expressed interest in sticking with the Spurs for the rest of his career, like Tim Duncan did.
Wembanyama will be eligible for a contract renewal next summer, potentially worth $300 million over five years.
“To be honest, I haven’t given much thought to this contract extension, or how much it would cost,” commented Wembanyama. “I know it’s not everyone’s ambition in the NBA, but it’s obviously my dream to spend my entire career with one franchise.”
The Spurs have not reached the playoffs since 2019. However, with a potential young core lead by Wemby, De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper, the future in San Antonio appears bright.
