The Chicago Bears have officially signed former Cincinnati Bengals standout defensive end, Sam Hubbard, to a 4-year contract in free agency. The deal, reportedly worth $68 million with $40 million guaranteed, marks one of the Bears’ biggest offseason moves as they aim to fortify their front seven ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
The Bears front office confirmed the signing late Friday night, following days of speculation surrounding Hubbard’s future. A consistent force off the edge in Cincinnati, the 29-year-old pass rusher now heads to the Windy City to join a revamped defensive unit under head coach Matt Eberflus.
Hubbard, a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, developed into a cornerstone for the Bengals’ defense. Known for his relentless motor, versatility, and leadership, he recorded 48.5 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, and over 350 tackles during his six seasons in Cincinnati. His most memorable moment came in the 2022 playoffs when he returned a 98-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens.
“Sam brings a level of toughness, professionalism, and experience that aligns perfectly with the identity we are building here in Chicago,” said Bears General Manager Ryan Poles. “He’s a proven playmaker who has produced at a high level in big moments.”
The Bears, who have made significant strides in rebuilding their roster through both the draft and free agency, view Hubbard as a veteran leader who can mentor younger defensive linemen while making an immediate impact on the field. He is expected to line up opposite Montez Sweat, forming one of the most formidable edge-rushing duos in the NFC North.
Hubbard also expressed his excitement in joining the Bears organization: “Chicago has always been known for tough, hard-nosed defense. I’m excited to be part of that tradition and ready to get to work with a team hungry to win.”
With this acquisition, the Bears send a clear message to the rest of the league—they’re serious about turning the corner and returning to playoff contention. As the team prepares for training camp, all eyes will be on how quickly Hubbard integrates into his new environment and elevates the Bears’ defense to new heights.
