As the trade deadline approaches, clubs with needs will seek agreements that address critical issues. Because so many clubs stay in contention under the present playoff format, which allows six teams from each league to make the playoffs, it’s not always easy to find a trade partner willing to deal with a valuable player. The San Diego Padres are in the running for a National League Wild Card position, and they need some help in the outfield.
According to Major League Baseball source Jeff Passan, the Padres may be willing to negotiate a trade for the Boston Red Sox’ Jarren Duran.
While the Red Sox are currently on a seven-game winning streak entering their Friday night game against the Tampa Bay Rays, they appear to have an excess of outfielders and may be willing to make a trade.
Duran had a fantastic 2024 season and was named Most Valuable Player in last season’s All-Star Game, but he hasn’t been as productive this season. Nonetheless, he combines speed and strength to become one of the most interesting players in the game.
He would be an excellent addition to the Padres, and he could play all of the outfield positions—though he has most of his experience in left field or center. San Diego’s primary need is in left field, as Fernando Tatis Jr. is in right and Jackson Merrill is in center.
The Padres would have to go inventive to complete the deal for the Red Sox outfielder.
Roman Anthony, the Red Sox’s best prospect, was promoted to the parent club last month and appears to be a rising star. According to insiders, Anthony will likely play in the outfield practically every game moving forward.
Ceddanne Rafaela, a centerfielder, has emerged as one of the greatest in the American League. Over the previous month, he has improved his offensive performance while also being a great defensive player. Wilyer Abreu is one of the squad’s finest power hitters, leading the team with 18 home runs.
In addition to those three players, Masataka Yoshida has returned to the team after missing more than 90 games due to a shoulder injury. Yoshida is primarily a designated hitter, but he can also play outfield.
The Red Sox appear to have an abundance of outfielders, so they may be willing to make a trade in exchange for a starting pitcher or a good reliever. According to Passan, San Diego reliever Robert Suarez could be the Red Sox’s top target in the bullpen.
