Early in the winter, NBA speculations circulated about a possible Giannis Antetokounmpo deal. Damian Lillard’s probable absence for the entire season contributed significantly to the two-time NBA MVP’s uncertain future in Milwaukee.
However, the Bucks have bought out Lillard’s contract and replaced him with Myles Turner. That purchase has put an end to Giannis trade speculations, but not everyone is giving up on the concept.
Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale has proposed a fresh “realistic” Antetokounmpo trade suggestion. His proposal was for the Suprs to trade newly drafted No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper, Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, three first-round picks, and two second-round picks in return for the Greek Freak.
While dealing the face of a franchise like Antetokounmpo is always difficult to swallow, the Spurs can put together a respectable package, lead by Harper. While the other players may not be standouts, Harper has the potential to become the Bucks’ next franchise cornerstone.
“Milwaukee and San Antonio can disagree on finer matters. Should Stephon Castle be added instead of Harper? Would the Spurs contemplate trading both if it meant saving their first-round equity? Should the Bucks target Devin Vassell over Barnes or Johnson?
There are numerous Giannis-to-San Antonio variants. The most important thing is to get him there. A baseline trio of Giannis, Victor Wembanyama, and De’Aaron Fox, with Harper, Castle, and Vassell remaining on board, is both terrifying and championship-caliber.
It’s difficult to see the Bucks dealing Antetokounmpo after making the bold and aggressive decision to waive Lillard and sign Turner to a contract worth more than $100 million. That is a move that screams attempt to win now, not a warning that a rebuild is imminent.
