The San Antonio Spurs have had a busy summer thus far, beginning with the NBA Draft. With the No. 2 overall pick, the Spurs selected Dylan Harper, a potential franchise cornerstone. They strengthened their frontcourt with the free agent signing of Luke Kornet and the trade for Kelly Olynyk. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Spurs’ latest free agent deal is the return of veteran guard Jordan McLaughlin.
The Spurs’ addition of Jordan McLaughlin in free agency expands their roster to 13 players. McLaughlin returns to the franchise for his first complete season in a Spurs uniform.
. He was moved to the Spurs with De’Aaron Fox ahead of last season’s trade deadline in a multi-team deal that also included the Sacramento Kings and the Chicago Bulls.
McLaughlin featured in 18 games for the Spurs during the second half of the season, averaging slightly more than six minutes per game. He averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 assists while shooting 53.6 percent from the field, 45 percent from three, and 100 percent from the free throw line. McLaughlin hit 41.3 percent from the three-point line in 46 games last season, including those with the Kings.
The now seven-year NBA veteran clearly played an important role for the Spurs in the second part of the season, both on the court and in the locker room. McLaughlin started his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2019-20, signing a two-way contract.
After two seasons on a two-way contract, McLaughlin signed a normal contract with the Wolves for the 2021-22 season. He spent the first five seasons of his NBA career with the Wolves before signing with the Kings as a free agency last offseason.
With McLaughlin’s return, the Spurs’ backcourt depth chart now includes McLaughlin, Fox, Harper, Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, and Devin Vassell, as well as Keldon Johnson, who can play guard.
