JUST NOW: Spurs Have Agreed a Shocking Deal To Sign Unsigned Nine-Time All-Star and Former MVP in Free Agency

The San Antonio Spurs have only signed one free agent thus far, but adding Luke Kornet should alleviate their backup center problem.

After drafting Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant, the Spurs appear to be on track to compete for a playoff place in the loaded Western Conference, yet they still have the salary room and roster spots to add a veteran free agent on a team-friendly contract.

Russell Westbrook, a nine-time All-Star and former MVP, is yet to be signed following a revival with the Denver Nuggets, and the Spurs have been mentioned as a potential landing site.

NBA Rumors: Spurs Land Russell Westbrook In Trade Scenario

“Already a team with so much guard depth, but ironically enough, De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle all fit into the non-shooting guard archetype, something Westbrook perfected in his prime,” Tyler Rourke, of The Sporting News, said. “In this case, Westbrook would be chasing that ring in a mentor role.”

Given that Westbrook is one of the most often used players in NBA history, putting him with a young squad full of players that require the ball in their hands does not make sense.

Of course, the Spurs were successful last season with Chris Paul serving as a seasoned point guard and mentor, but the arrival of Fox could assist replace Paul while providing more output than Westbrook.
