After signing Luke Kornet in free agency behind Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs believe they have found their backup for the now and future.
When Wembanyama sits, the Spurs scarcely resemble an NBA club; adding a decent center for the next four years should help relieve this.
However, unless Charles Bassey or Bismack Biyombo are re-signed, the Spurs will need to add a third-string center for injury insurance and, maybe, to fill a veteran role.
Jeremy Sochan can play a few minutes as a small-ball center, but a more typical big man would work wonderfully.
Kevin Love, who was dealt to the Utah Jazz from the Miami Heat, is expected to have his remaining contract bought out, and the Spurs could be interested.
Love is 36 years old and long past his peak, yet he averaged 5.3 points and 4.1 rebounds last season with the Heat while spacing the floor. Granted, he has not played in 65 games since 2021-22, but he would be a “culture” pickup rather than someone who would play a lot of minutes.
Of course, if the Jazz cut him, he is anticipated to sign with the Heat, Cavaliers, or Timberwolves (teams he has previously played for) or rejoin LeBron James on the Los Angeles Lakers.
While Love’s move to the Spurs may seem unlikely, the five-time All-Star still has tremendous value and might spend his final year or two chasing his second championship in Texas.
